Eating Healthy On Vacation

Taking a break from eating healthy on vacation can be tempting. After all, you are trying to relax, and sometimes thinking about your diet can be stressful.

But there are easy ways to relax on vacation while remaining faithful to your healthy habits.

Here are our top tips for staying in control, even while letting loose.

Traveling

Air travel:

In the airport, you might be tempted to eat unhealthy food at one of the many restaurants, food kiosks, and newsstands, especially if you are trying to kill time. If you find yourself bored in the airport and tempted to snack, buy a book of crosswords or sudoku instead.

This will keep your hands and your mind occupied while you wait. If you are hungry and not just bored, there are healthy options to be found, such as fresh fruit and salads.

On the airplane, it is easy to request a low-fat or vegetarian meal. Just skip the complementary soft drinks and opt for fruit juice or water instead.

Driving:

Rather than relying on fast food, drive prepared with a cooler filled with nutritious foods. Some good options include fresh fruits and vegetables, crackers, yogurt, and sandwiches.

If you do have to stop and eat along the way, look for a Subway or similar restaurant where you can get a sandwich or salad loaded with veggies, and lean protein. There are healthy options at gas stations too, including fruit, yogurt, granola bars and nuts.

At the Hotel

When you arrive at your hotel, turn down the minibar key. This will help you avoid temptation, and save some money, too. If your hotel offers a continental breakfast, stick to fruits, cereals, and proteins.

If the hotel has a stove, microwave, or refrigerator, you can go out to a grocery store and buy healthy food to cook and keep in your room.

Eating Out

Part of the fun about being on vacation is trying out the local cuisine. You don’t have to forgo this pleasure, you just need to be mindful of portion sizes.

Restaurants usually serve large portions, so to avoid overeating, share a dish with a friend or take half of it home for later.

With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation and stay healthy. All it takes is a little planning, and you can enjoy a healthy lifestyle wherever you go.
